What is vicarious liability?

Legal responsibility for another’s acts — the principle that puts a firm on the hook for its people and its subcontractors, and a reason certificates from subs matter.

Why it matters

You can be liable for work done by others on your behalf — subcontractors, employees, partners. Your policy should cover your vicarious exposure, and your subcontracts should require the subs to carry their own coverage so the claim lands on their policy first.
