What professional liability covers for Designers

Designers — graphic, web, UX, and interior — face professional liability claims when creative work causes a client financial loss: a print run with the wrong phone number, a website launch that breaks e-commerce during peak season, brand work that steps on someone’s trademark, or an interior specification that blows a budget or fails an accessibility requirement. Design disputes very often start as taste disagreements and become negligence claims once money is at stake; the policy’s job is to fund a defense and settle the ones with substance.

A designer’s E&O typically includes media liability for the profession’s signature exposure — unintentional copyright, trademark, and licensing missteps in fonts, images, and creative assets (see media liability). Web designers holding client credentials or customer data should add cyber liability; interior designers specifying furnishings and managing installs often add general liability for site exposure. Agency contracts and interior-design letters of agreement increasingly require $1M in E&O.

What designers typically pay

Design E&O is priced on revenue and discipline — digital/graphic work sits at the affordable end; interior design with procurement responsibility and web work with data exposure price higher.

Business profile Typical annual E&O premium range*
Freelance graphic/web designer, under $100k ~$400 – $850
Designer/studio, $100k–$300k revenue ~$600 – $1,400
Interior designer with procurement/install oversight ~$900 – $2,500
Studio, $300k–$1M revenue ~$1,400 – $3,500

*Illustrative market ranges based on typical small-business placements; your premium depends on revenue, limits, claims history, contracts, and carrier appetite. Not a quote or offer of coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Does designer E&O cover font and image licensing mistakes?

Unintentional infringement — a font used beyond its license, a stock image whose license didn’t cover the use — is exactly what the media liability portion defends. Deliberate use of unlicensed assets is excluded, so keep license records with project files.

A client is refusing to pay and threatening to sue over the work. What now?

Fee disputes that arrive with allegations of defective professional work should be reported to your carrier as potential claims — many policies can defend the counterclaim even while the fee fight proceeds. Report early; late notice is one of the few ways to lose otherwise-available coverage.

I design websites. Am I liable if a client site gets hacked?

If the claim alleges your build was negligently insecure, it lands on E&O (or the third-party side of a combined form). If you also host or maintain sites, you have ongoing exposure that belongs on a tech E&O + cyber form rather than a pure design policy — describe your services accurately at application.

Do interior designers need more than E&O?

Usually yes: general liability for job-site presence and client premises, plus coverage considerations around goods in transit and an installation floater for furnishings you procure. E&O remains the piece that answers design-error and budget/spec claims.
